How to Be an Efficient Firefighter?

A firefighter’s job is never easy as it demands strength, endurance, courage, and commitment.  If you believe that you have what it takes to be a firefighter then head to the Fire and Rescue Service and get the application form for fire brigade recruitment.  Remember, you need to be at least 18 years old in order to qualify and become a firefighter in the UK.

Getting tested

Before you can be a firefighter, you shall undergo a series of tests that ranges from psychological exams that encompasses mathematical skills, information comprehension, and problem solving to general medical test.  When you get through that, you are on to the physical test that will gauge your physical abilities when it comes to strength and stamina as a firefighter’s work is very physical.  An interview is follows to assess your character and other skills.  Lastly, the final medical test and when you have passed all that, you are now ready for the fire brigade training.

Being prepared

While there are a lot of men who wants to become a firefighter and have applied with the fire brigade recruitment office, only a handful would get to reach the training phase.  You should be proud of yourself if you have reached this point but you should also get ready for a real rigorous training that would turn you to become a good firefighter.  There would be physical, mental as well as psychological training to prepare you and equipped you with the right skills to face all possible fire scenarios and how to properly deal with these emergency situations.  You will learn not only how to use the different firefighting equipments but also first aid procedures that could help you fight fires and save lives.

Fully committed

Firefighters need to be tough to endure the heat and the hard work that comes with firefighting and the fire brigade training can help in the physical, mental, and psychological aspects of it.  You are trained to work in pairs, to have the necessary tools as well as the needed backup before even venturing into a fire emergency.  As a firefighter you want to get as much as you can from the training and you also need to have courage and commitment in order to be an effective firefighter.  After all, not everyone has what it takes to face the enormous danger that every fire accident presents.  Being calm and focused are important in order to effectively put the fire out, rescue the people in danger, and come out of it unscathed.

From the time you filed your application for fire brigade recruitment until you finally become a firefighter, discipline has been inculcated in you.  There are certain procedures to be followed and you must always adhere to these so that as a firefighter you are not endangering yourself as well as your colleagues with your actions.  But more often than not certain situations calls for immediate decisions and you must be able to trust yourself when you make such judgment calls especially if it would mean saving lives and making a difference.
