Teach your Kids about Home Fire Safety
Home fires can happen to any family. This is why, it is very important that the whole family especially the children are properly educated about the basics of fire safety, prevention, and emergency preparedness. To help you teach kids about home fire safety, here are some ideas to get you started.
Fire Dangers
First and foremost, you should tell your kids how dangerous a fire could be. Tell them in a way that they would best understand how fires could damage homes and properties, endanger lives, and cause serious injuries. This way, it would be easier for them to absorb and grasp the concept of fire safety now that they know how crucial this matter is.
Fire Prevention
Never play with matches is the ultimate fire prevention rule that most parents give to their children. Aside from that, you should also teach about other possible fire preventive measures such as alarming you right away if they find any fire occurring in the home or to call up the fire brigade immediately for any flame outbreak. You can further prevent fire by securing all flammable and combustible items out of their reach. Just because you commanded them to stay away from matches does not mean that you just leave matches lying around.
Escape Route
Draw a map of your home and use arrows to indicate the possible escape routes that they should use in an event of a fire. Be calm and composed when explaining the escape plan to your kids so they would not feel threatened or paranoid about the possibility of a fire. Be sure to cover things like safe place outside for everyone to meet, number of the urban or rural fire brigade, proper ways to get out safely, and warnings about fire escaping (such as never go back, get out as fast s you can and so on).
Fire Drills
As they say, practice makes perfect so it is essential that you and the kids practice what you have planned with the escape route. You can do this by holding a home fire drill at least several times a year so kids are able to practice getting out of the burning premises safely and quickly. This would also help them be prepared for such scenario. If they are prepared and they know what to do, there is little chance that they will panic, freeze, or not be able to do the right thing. Also, for older children like those who are already in their teens, you may teach them the proper ways to use water fire extinguishers or fire blankets.
Tips to Make Fire Safety Education Fun and Enjoyable
Bring kids to the fire station for a field trip. Here, they will get to meet real firefighters and see a real fire truck. Turn learning time into games. Instead of just teaching kids about the three components of fire (oxygen, heat, and fuel), turn it into a fun guessing game. Instead of simply telling kids what are the things they should do to prevent fire, do it in the form of storytelling.
Teaching kids about fire safety is not that difficult if you explain clearly to them how crucial the matter is and if you are able to inject a little fun factor into it.
